Past Masters are those that have paid their dues as former Worshipful Masters in a Masonic Lodge. After his tenure, a Worshipful Master is called a Past Master. For a year, the Past Master held the highest position in the lodge and dedicated a large amount of time and effort to run the Masonic Lodge. The title ‘Past Master’ is used to honor him.
A Past Master Masonic ring is worn by a Past Master. This ring is a sign of honor, and it tells people of his title as a Past Master in the Masonic Lodge.
Past Masters wear their Masonic ring ‘pointing out’ as opposed to ‘pointing in’ like other Brothers. The ring is displayed towards others to see. Everyone that sees the Past Master ring identifies them as a Mason and ask them questions. In essence, Past Masters become Freemason ambassadors willing to introduce the Brotherhood to others. Other Freemasons traditionally wear their rings ‘pointing in’ until they become a Past Master and earn the right to wear their ring ‘pointing out.’
